The Boy with Nails for Eyes

Inside the town there is nothing but soot, bricks and cogs. Outside the town there is nothing but war. The crows say so – they blanket the roofs, shouting bloody murder, stories from across the sea down into the streets below. The people no longer even notice they wake up afraid, work afraid, sleep afraid.

The Boy with Nails for Eyes is a fantasy comic set in a town where the crows speak, day and night the factories spew smoke, and great war machines stride across the horizon.

This is a story about three children of that town. Donald, whose world is tooth and shadow. Possessed by terror, he feeds dead animals to the dark under the streets. Then there is Mary, self-contained and adrift since her mother disappeared, hiding from fate in childish games. And Bobby, who think he is going mad.

Bobby has the same dream every night, a dream that calls him out of bed to the abandoned bunker at the centre of town. It has plans for him.

Inside the town another war is beginning.

A collection of stories including Some Bad News, about an office worker who finds a larvae crawling in his scalp, Wreckage of Dreams, based on the true story of a refugee boat left to drift at sea, and On Harrowdown Hill, about the death of David Kelly.

Both Wreckage of Dreams and On Harrowdown Hill were respectively selected by Neil Gaiman and Will Self as two of the ten finalists in the 2012 Minioperas competition run by English National Opera.

Wreckage of Dreams has become the basis of several pieces of music. These include a short opera by Roger Assar Johansson (the eventual winner of the music segment of Minioperas) that was premiered in Gothenburg, Sweden in October 2013, and a piece of music by Riz Maslen, aka Neotropic.
